गाँव का साधारण ग्वाला

उत्तर भारत के एक गाँव में गोपाल नामक एक ग्वाला रहता था। वह न तो पढ़ा-लिखा था, न ही उसने कभी किसी धार्मिक ग्रंथ का अध्ययन किया था। उसका जीवन बहुत साधारण था—दिनभर गाँववालों की सैकड़ों गायें जंगल में चराना, जंगल में रहना, और उसकी पत्नी द्वारा लाया गया भोजन खाना। गाँव के लोग अपनी गायें उसे चराने के लिए दे देते थे और बदले में उसके घर अन्न, दाल, सब्ज़ी आदि भेज देते थे। गोपाल को न तो किसी धर्म का ज्ञान था, न ही किसी साधना का। वह बस अपने काम में मग्न रहता था।

संतों का आगमन और नाम-जप की प्रेरणा

एक दिन, जंगल से संतों की एक टोली गुजर रही थी। वे “श्री राम जय राम जय जय राम” का कीर्तन कर रहे थे। गोपाल ने पहली बार ऐसा भक्ति-भाव देखा और सुना। संतों के भाव-विभोर होकर गाने से वह बहुत प्रभावित हुआ। उसने कीर्तन की पूरी धुन तो नहीं पकड़ी, लेकिन “राम नाम” उसके मन में बस गया। अब वह अकेले में कभी-कभी जोर-जोर से “राम राम” जपने लगा। कभी गाने लगता, कभी नाचने लगता। गाँव के लोग उसका मज़ाक उड़ाते, लेकिन गोपाल को इससे कोई फर्क नहीं पड़ता था। वह कहता, “मुझे अच्छा लगता है, इसलिए गाता हूँ। क्या इसमें कोई बुराई है?”

गुरु की खोज

गोपाल के मन में एक सवाल उठने लगा—“क्या यह नाम-जप सचमुच कल्याणकारी है? क्या इससे भगवान की प्राप्ति हो सकती है?” उसके मन में सच्ची जिज्ञासा जागी। एक दिन, जब लोग उसका उपहास कर रहे थे, तभी एक परमहंस संत वहाँ से गुजरे। गोपाल उनके चरणों में गिर पड़ा और बोला, “महाराज, क्या यह नाम-जप मुझे भगवान तक पहुँचा सकता है?” संत मुस्कुराए और बोले, “बेटा, यह नाम अत्यंत मंगलकारी है, लेकिन अब तुम्हें एक सच्चे गुरु की आवश्यकता है। जब तुम गुरु-कृपा के पात्र बनोगे, तब तुम्हें भगवान के दर्शन अवश्य होंगे।”

गोपाल ने संत से विनती की कि वे ही उसके गुरु बन जाएँ, लेकिन संत बोले, “मैं तीर्थयात्रा पर हूँ, अभी संभव नहीं। लेकिन सच्चे मन से भगवान से प्रार्थना करो, तुम्हें अवश्य सद्गुरु मिलेंगे।” संत की बातों ने गोपाल के मन में गुरु-प्राप्ति की तीव्र इच्छा जगा दी।

साधना और गुरु-प्राप्ति

अब गोपाल एकांत में साधना करने लगा। कभी पेड़ पर चढ़कर देखता कि कोई संत आ रहे हैं या नहीं। उसका मन बस एक ही खोज में लगा रहता—“मुझे मेरे सद्गुरु मिल जाएँ।” बहुत समय बीत गया, लेकिन उसका विश्वास अडिग रहा। एक दिन, एक तेजस्वी महात्मा उसकी ओर आते दिखे। गोपाल ने उन्हें देखते ही पहचान लिया—“यही मेरे सद्गुरु हैं!” वह दौड़कर उनके चरणों में गिर पड़ा। संत ने उसे स्नान करने को कहा, फिर एकांत में बैठकर उपदेश देने का वचन दिया।

गुरु-आज्ञा: एक नियम

संत ने कहा, “मैं तुम्हें कुछ नियम दूँगा, जिनका पालन तुम्हें करना होगा।” गोपाल ने बड़ी सरलता से कहा, “महाराज, मैं सीधा-सादा गँवार हूँ, बहुत सारे नियमों का पालन नहीं कर पाऊँगा। कृपा करके कोई एक नियम दे दीजिए, जिसका मैं जीवनभर पालन कर सकूँ।” संत उसकी सरलता और निष्ठा से प्रसन्न हुए और बोले, “आज से तुम्हारे आराध्य श्रीकृष्ण होंगे। जब तक तुम गोविंद को भोग न लगा लो, तब तक कुछ भी मत खाना।” गोपाल ने वचन दिया कि वह इस नियम का पालन प्राण रहते करेगा।

नियम का पालन और कठिन परीक्षा

अब गोपाल के घर से भोजन आता, वह एकांत में बैठकर प्रेमपूर्वक भगवान को भोग लगाने के लिए बुलाता—“आओ गोविंद, भोग पाओ।” लेकिन भगवान प्रकट नहीं होते। वह पूरे दिन प्रतीक्षा करता, फिर भोजन गाय को खिला देता और स्वयं भूखा रह जाता। यह क्रम कई दिनों तक चला। तीसरे, चौथे, पाँचवें, छठे, सातवें दिन भी यही हुआ। गोपाल की आयु पचास वर्ष थी, शरीर दुर्बल होने लगा, लेकिन उसकी निष्ठा में कोई कमी नहीं आई। वह सोचता—“गुरु की आज्ञा का उल्लंघन नहीं करूँगा, चाहे प्राण निकल जाएँ।”

पत्नी की चिंता

अट्ठारह दिन बीत गए, गोपाल ने कुछ नहीं खाया। उसकी पत्नी ने चिंता जताई, “क्या आप बीमार हैं? भोजन क्यों नहीं कर रहे?” गोपाल ने बस इतना कहा, “आप घर जाइए, मैं ठीक हूँ।” वह भीतर-ही-भीतर भगवान की प्रतीक्षा करता रहा। सत्ताईस दिन बीत गए, अब उसमें चलने-फिरने की भी शक्ति नहीं रही। पत्नी ने कहा, “अब तो मैं आपकी सेवा के लिए यहीं रहूँगी।” गोपाल ने इशारे से कहा, “आज भर के लिए चली जाओ, कल से जैसी तुम्हारी इच्छा।”

श्रीकृष्ण का साक्षात्कार

गोपाल लेटे-लेटे रो रहा था, आँखों से आँसू बह रहे थे। उसने भोजन का पात्र खोला और भीतर-ही-भीतर कहा, “प्रभु, या तो स्वयं आकर भोग ग्रहण करो, या मुझे अपने धाम बुला लो।” तभी उसे एक स्वर सुनाई दिया—“गोपाल!” उसने आँखें खोलीं, सामने वही पीतांबरधारी, मोर मुकुटधारी, मुरलीधर श्रीकृष्ण खड़े थे। केवल गोपाल ही उन्हें देख पा रहा था। भगवान ने उसे दिव्य दृष्टि दी थी।

गोपाल ने काँपते हुए इशारा किया—“प्रभु, मुझसे नहीं होगा, आप ही कृपा करके निकट आ जाइए।” भगवान उसके समीप आए, गोपाल ने उनके चरणों में सिर रख दिया। आँसू बहते-बहते प्रभु के चरण धोने लगे। भगवान ने उसे उठाया, हृदय से लगाया और बोले, “प्यारे गोपाल, अब तू रो मत। देख, मैं तेरे प्रेम में पगी हुई सूखी रोटियाँ अभी पाता हूँ।” भगवान ने प्रेमपूर्वक उसका भोजन ग्रहण किया और कहा, “त्रिभुवन का कोई भी भोग मुझे इतना प्रिय नहीं जितना प्रेम से अर्पित यह अन्न। जो सच्चे हृदय से मुझे पुकारता है, मैं अवश्य उसके पास आता हूँ।”

वरदान और अंत

भगवान ने कहा, “अब तेरे जीवन में कभी दुख नहीं रहेगा। अब किसी की गाय चराने की जरूरत नहीं है। तेरे कुल में सदा लक्ष्मी बढ़ती रहेगी।” भगवान अंतर्ध्यान हो गए। गोपाल ने आँखें बंद कीं, तो देखा कि भगवान उसके मानस पटल पर विराजमान हैं। अब वह हर दिन अपने प्रभु से बात कर सकता था, उनका दर्शन कर सकता था।

शिक्षा

गोपाल चरवाहा की कहानी हमें सिखाती है कि—

• सच्ची भक्ति और गुरु-आज्ञा का पालन ही भगवान की प्राप्ति का मार्ग है।

• भगवान को भोग, पूजा या धन से नहीं, बल्कि प्रेम और दैन्यता से प्रसन्न किया जा सकता है।

• साधारण जीवन, सरल हृदय और दृढ़ निष्ठा से भी परमात्मा को पाया जा सकता है।

• गुरु की आज्ञा का पालन करते हुए कभी भी हार नहीं माननी चाहिए, चाहे कितनी भी कठिनाई आए।

One day, a group of saints passed through the forest, singing the kirtan “Shri Ram Jai Ram Jai Jai Ram.” Gopal was deeply moved by their devotional singing. Though he could not remember the entire chant, the name “Ram” stayed with him. He began to chant “Ram Ram” alone, sometimes singing loudly, sometimes even dancing. The villagers mocked him, but Gopal was unaffected. He would say, “I sing because it brings me joy. Is there any harm in that?”

The Search for a Guru

A question began to stir in Gopal’s mind—“Is this chanting truly beneficial? Can it really lead to God?” His heart was filled with genuine curiosity. One day, while people were mocking him, a saintly ascetic passed by. Gopal fell at his feet and asked, “Maharaj, can this chanting really lead me to God?” The saint smiled and replied, “Son, this is indeed the most auspicious name, but now you need a true guru. When you become worthy of a guru’s grace, you will surely have the vision of God.”

Gopal pleaded with the saint to become his guru, but the saint said, “I am on a pilgrimage; it is not possible now. But if you sincerely pray to God, you will surely receive your true guru.” The saint’s words ignited a burning desire in Gopal’s heart to find his guru.

Spiritual Practice and Meeting the Guru

Gopal began to practice in solitude, sometimes climbing trees to see if any saint was approaching. His mind was absorbed in one pursuit—“May I find my guru.” Time passed, but his faith never wavered. One day, a radiant saint appeared, and Gopal instantly recognized him as his guru. He ran and fell at the saint’s feet. The saint asked him to bathe and then promised to instruct him in private.

The Guru’s Command: One Rule

The saint said, “I will give you some rules to follow.” Gopal replied with great simplicity, “Maharaj, I am an uneducated, simple man. I cannot follow many rules. Please give me just one rule that I can follow for life.” Pleased with his sincerity, the saint said, “From today, Lord Krishna will be your worshipable deity. Do not eat anything until you have offered it to the Lord.” Gopal vowed to follow this rule as long as he lived.

Following the Rule and the Test of Faith

Now, whenever food arrived from home, Gopal would sit alone under a tree and lovingly call out to the Lord, “Come, Krishna, accept this offering.” But the Lord did not appear. Gopal waited all day, then fed the food to the cows and remained hungry. This continued for several days—the third, fourth, fifth, sixth, and seventh days passed in the same way. Gopal, now fifty, grew physically weak, but his resolve never faltered. He thought, “I will not break my guru’s command, even if it costs me my life.”

His Wife’s Concern

Eighteen days passed without Gopal eating anything. His wife, worried, asked, “Are you ill? Why aren’t you eating?” Gopal simply said, “Go home, I am fine.” He continued to wait for the Lord in silence. Twenty-seven days passed; he was now too weak to move. His wife insisted on staying to care for him, but Gopal gestured, “Just go for today; tomorrow, do as you wish.”

The Vision of Lord Krishna

Lying down, tears streaming from his eyes, Gopal opened the food container and prayed, “O Lord, either come yourself and accept this offering, or call me to your abode and feed me there. This is my final offering.” Suddenly, he heard a voice—“Gopal!” He opened his eyes and saw Lord Krishna standing before him, adorned in yellow silk, with a peacock feather crown and flute. Only Gopal could see Him, for the Lord had granted him divine vision.

Trembling, Gopal gestured, “O Lord, I cannot… I am helpless… please, come closer Yourself…” The Lord understood and came near. Gopal placed his head at the Lord’s feet, his tears washing them. The Lord lifted him up, embraced him, and said, “Beloved Gopal, do not cry. See, I shall now partake of these dry rotis steeped in your love.” The Lord ate the simple meal and said, “No offering in the three worlds can please Me as this does. Whoever calls upon Me with a true heart, I surely come to them.”

The Blessing and Aftermath

The Lord blessed Gopal, saying, “You shall never experience sorrow again. Go home now; you no longer need to herd anyone’s cows. Prosperity will forever grow in your family line.” The Lord disappeared. Gopal closed his eyes and saw the Lord enthroned in his mind. Now, he could converse with and behold the Lord every day.
